General Description:

 

Under direct supervision, monitor swimming pool activities and ensure the safety of swimmers and patrons. Help prevent incidents by remaining alert and enforcing all safety guidelines. Possess knowledge of rescue and emergency medical procedures. Duties may include assisting with swim lessons, patrolling locker room areas, helping to keep the facility clean and manning various duty stations.

 

Essential Job Elements:

  1. Support and work effectively with the public, supervisors and other staff.
  2. Monitor swimmers and patrons both in the water and outside the pool to ensure safety.
  3. Enforce all safety rules and guidelines.
  4. Remain alert at all times.
  5. Be proactive and recognize potential hazards before they result in an emergency.
  6. Implement rescue and emergency procedures as needed.
  7. Prepare activity and incident reports.
  8. Perform pool maintenance and cleaning, as directed.
  9. Attend in-service training, as directed.
  10. Maintain passing competency in swim skills and related tests.
  11. Man the patron admissions desk and take tickets when assigned.
  12. Promptly report to work for all scheduled shifts.
  13. Promptly report to scheduled duty stations within the assigned shift rotation.
  14. May lead or direct the work of others, as assigned.
  15. Provide appropriate care for the safekeeping and protection of District equipment, tools, facilities and other assets.
  16. Assures compliance with appropriate safety practices and procedures and with applicable federal, state and local codes, regulations and requirements.
  17. Supports with integrity the mission, vision, goals and positive culture of Joseph City Schools.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  1. At least 16 years of age.
  2. Valid lifeguard and CPR certifications. Training is provided by the District.
  3. Must pass pre-employment health exam.
  4. Must pass pre-employment physical skills test.
  5. Ability to remain alert, attentive and responsible.
  6. Communication and interpersonal skills sufficiently effective to perform assigned duties.

 

Additional Requirements After Hire:

  1. Keep all certifications current.
  2. Maintain required competencies in CPR, first aid and water rescue techniques.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Frequent standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, balancing, handling, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing. Occasionally use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls. Vigorous swimming under strenuous conditions.  Demonstrate ability to swim 200 yards in 3 minutes 30 seconds, tread water with hands above water for 2 minutes and retrieve heavy objects from under 12 feet of water in 1 minute 30 seconds. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus and to function under conditions with highly reflective pool water. Long periods of acute visual and mental attention.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and pool mechanical systems. Exposed to wet and dry conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high. May be exposed to stressful situations as a result of human behavior. Caution necessary to avoid harm from misuse of equipment, chemicals and loud noise. The employee must be able to closely adhere to duty schedules with time constraints and interact with students, employees, and patrons.
